This work assembles a cluster of objects drawn from memories of growing up in East Asia. Rather than reconstructing a specific place, the backgrounds are generated using artificial intelligence to evoke generalized spaces that exist between recognition and ambiguity. These AI-generated scenes are printed as physical backdrops and re-photographed with the objects, collapsing the boundary between the virtual and the material.
The use of generative AI stems from the idea that it operates as a statistical archive of collective visual memory, producing images from patterns extracted across vast datasets rather than from lived experience. By placing personal artifacts within these algorithmically constructed environments, the work explored how memory is mediated and reconstructed, while examining the tension between individual recollection and collective cultural imagination.
